Attachedness rises with water, and declines in wind and rain. Leaves in the model have an "attachedness" attribute, which the model uses to indicate how strongly the leaf is clinging to the tree. Raindrops disappear when they have no more water left in them. Leaves collect water from nearby raindrops. Similarly, all of the raindrops travel up the trunk of the tree, and then along the branches (which are not represented in the model), out to the leaves. In this model, the entire ground is assumed to contain tree roots, and thus all raindrops flow toward the trunk once they reach the ground. Water does not enter each leaf directly, but is absorbed by the tree's roots, from which it is pulled up the trunk and into the branches and leaves. (The higher the concentration of sugar, the more anthocyanins are produced.) Sugar concentration increases when cold weather causes the tree to shut down its water circulation to the rest of the tree whatever water and sugar are trapped in the leaf are then converted into anthocyanins.Įach tick of the clock in the model consists of two stages: (1) Weather (rain, wind, sun) affects the leaves, adding or removing sugar, water, or chlorophyll as appropriate, and (2) the leaf reacts to its environment, adding anthocyanins as appropriate, and changing color to reflect the modified environment. Anthocyanin molecules are created in the presence of high sugar concentrations and water concentrations in the leaf. Red comes from a substance called anthocyanins. As the chlorophyll dies, however, the presence of carotene becomes apparent, resulting in a yellow leaf. A leaf with lots more chlorophyll (typical in the summer) will be exclusively green, albeit with strong yellow tints masked behind the green. However, the yellow color is often masked by the chlorophyll's green color. The concentration of carotene remains constant throughout a leaf's life. Carotene molecules help give color to carrots and sweet potatoes. Yellow comes from a substance called carotene. Overall chlorophyll concentration rises again in the sunlight (as long as there is not too much!) and when there is water. Thus, cold sunny fall days make the overall concentration of chlorophyll decrease. Chlorophyll molecules are destroyed and not replenished when they are exposed to excessive sunlight and when temperatures are low. Green comes from chlorophyll (or a set of related substances known as chlorophylls), which converts sunlight and water into sugar. Three substances contribute to a leaf's color: The colors that we see in each leaf stem from the presence of natural substances that are produced and stored in each leaf. (Leaves can be blown off by strong winds even if they have not yet changed color, so wind has a role too.) Why and how leaves change colors and fall is surprisingly complicated, and has to do with a combination of sunlight, heat, and rain. This model simulates the ways in which leaves change their colors and fall, making it possible to explore and understand this beautiful annual spectacle. If you live in a climate that is warm during the summer and cold in the winter, then you are probably familiar with the beautiful autumn phenomenon in which leaves turn color before dying and falling off of the tree. And if that involves a cup of hot milk, sounds like a great option to me. So one of the best ways to get a good night's sleep is to put your day to rest. Forgive me for getting this mundane, but what about the old, you know, cup of hot milk? I know, for example, that an extra glass of alcohol is not a good idea. ![]() If they can't get their mind off not sleeping and then go back to bed a little later when they're feeling tired again. Sometimes we actually recommend that people just give up and get out of bed for a while. And if they're able to just, you know, quietly lie in bed and start thinking about their favorite sports teams or a theater performance that they saw a couple of years ago or a family vacation and get their mind off it, sleep comes back a lot more quickly. MARTIN: One of the things that we often recommend is that people do something else. Probably the worse thing to do is to lie in bed and think about how horrible it is to be awake. SIMON: When I struggle, (laughter) I run plays in my mind by the old Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton. So if people go through a course of that and they're still struggling, sometimes we might add a sleeping pill to help with that. We usually think about sleeping pills as the second tool in our in our toolbox, not the first one. MARTIN: The first-line treatment for chronic sleep problems is a treatment called cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. SIMON: I have to ask, are over-the-counter sleep prescriptions safe? Poor sleep quality and insomnia is one of the consequences for people recovering from COVID as well. And then there's the impact of COVID itself on sleep. Purchasing over the counter and supplements to try to help folks sleep has gone up pretty dramatically. One is the number of people taking prescription sleeping pills has gone up during the COVID pandemic. MARTIN: We've seen a few trends that are quite concerning in this area. SIMON: And have you found any kind of link between COVID and sleep disorders? They tend to have a harder time even just getting along with their families and functioning in their daily lives. They're at higher risk for accidents and injuries. MARTIN: Good point - we know that people who don't sleep well or don't sleep enough have higher risk for cardiovascular diseases, metabolic issues, like Type 2 diabetes. And we should remind ourselves that lack of sleep isn't just aggravating. And those factors related to stress also can be very disruptive to our sleep. A lot of people were directly impacted by COVID, either because they themselves got sick or because their loved ones did. We also know that there's been, as you alluded to in your opening, a lot of stress in a lot of people's lives - you know, financial considerations. And adjusting to these new habits and routines, it takes some time. MARTIN: For a number of folks who, you know, maybe used to get up and go into an office every day, teleworking might be a permanent situation now. One is that for a lot of folks, their normal habits and routines around sleep are quite different these days. We think there's two big reasons for this. A lot of folks who slept perfectly well in their pre-pandemic lives are struggling now. And it's not just a bunch of anecdotes, is it? SIMON: So what's the secret? If you have an AV receiver and multiple sources, however, it gets more complicated. With a smart TV connected to a soundbar and a game console, for example, you can control streaming apps, audio and device switching from a single remote (the TV's), eliminating the need for a universal remote. Many entertainment systems today don't have as many separate devices as in the past, so you might not even need a universal remote. A number of cheap replacement clickers are available too, but we can't recommend them because we haven't tested them yet.Įven with the emergence of SofaBaton, the universal remote category is still less popular than before. And the Roku and Fire TV clickers, while great for controlling those streaming devices respectively, as well as most brands of TV, don't really qualify as "universal" remotes in the classic sense. The outgoing Fire TV Cube is expensive and more of a hybrid Alexa speaker/streamer than a universal remote, although it will also control your devices. So what's left? Among remotes we can recommend based on hands-on testing, not much. ![]() However, many people believe that poi files for garmin can be very beneficial.
